About Us

IMG_2144Shalom Uganda is the U.S. face and website for the Shalom Reconciliation Ministry in Kotido, Uganda.  This ministry is run by Rainbow Mike Okidi and their mission is to care for the youth and vulnerable poeple of Kotido that are homeless or lacking loving support from home.

SRM began in 2005 in response to Rainbow Mike’s experience with the needs of the street children in Kotido who are forced to sleep under awnings and scrounge for food.  He decided to give them a home and a place to grow.  Once the children have some basic support from home, they help the caregivers send them for basic primary and scondary schooling.  Check out the Get Involved page for more information on how you can help in this effort!

How the team came together

It began when Mike Barbee was working in Kotido, Uganda in 2005-2007 and met Rainbow Mike and became acquainted with his ministry to the children.  In his words: “After returning to the US, I wanted to make more people aware of the needs in the region and see the area turn from a land that is “Forgotten” to a land that is known, prayed over, and cared about.”  In 2009, a group of people from River Churches house-church network became interested in going on a scouting trip to meet and see for themselves the people and the ministry.  The two-week trip in June 2009 was that scouting mission and this website is part of our response to the things that we saw.  Thanks for checking it out!
